About
There are 30 Major League Baseball franchises. Each team has a governing body that is given the responsibility of drafting, trading, and signing players in order to build a competitive club. Some of these “governors” are better at their job than others. To my knowledge, there is no site on the Internet devoted to keeping track of general managers. Just like our politicians, these people effect our lives in ways we may not even realize. When Barry Bonds left Pittsburgh for San Francisco nearly twenty years ago, he left many of his biggest supporters behind, only to seduce Giants fans with his divine skills, and subsequently walk away from the game amid steroid controversy. For many fans, baseball is an escape from reality – a sanctuary, a place in which the trials and tribulations of everyday life take a backseat to the game. Making drastic changes to a team’s roster can be devastating to a fan. It’s like cutting a character out of your favorite story. How many Boston Red Sox fans were heartbroken when the team traded Nomar Garciaparra to the Cubs in 2004? A system of checks and balances is needed because some GMs have little idea how important they are in the grand scheme of baseball fandom.
